My first introduction to Indonesian film was the movie Romeo Juliet which is an Indonesian story about football fanaticism and hooliganism. I was in shock at the violence portrayed in the movie by the passionate supporters and so was apprehensive about attending my first football match in Bandung to watch Persib (Bandung) vs Persipura (Papua). I figured if the Jak weren’t playing in Bandung we should be ok….
The stadium is situated in a beautiful location surrounded by mountains and rice fields and the supporters arrived in their thousands – buses and cars were packed with people standing on roofs playing drums and chanting and everyone was so excited before the game.
Persib were the first to score and the crowd went crazy – drumming, singing, letting off fireworks from the stands and it felt like such great energy everywhere….. until Persipura scored and then it all turned ugly….
Suddenly being the only caucasian in a stadium of 40,000 extremely passionate Indonesian football supporters didn’t seem so appealing anymore… and let’s just say although it was an amazing experience to be there, I think I will stick to the safety of watching the game on tv from now on….
