On my walk home from Cicaringin School in the blazing heat, I met Sunta who is a worker at the rubber plantation in Kampung Cicaringin. Each day he must carve hundreds of trees so that the rubber runs down into a small collecting cup, which is then gathered and left at the side of the road for pick up. Sunta is paid Rp. 26,000 (approx AUD $2.85) per day and only Rp. 18,000 if it is raining as not much rubber can be collected during this time. Although it is not an easy life, he had the biggest smile and was so happy to stop and chat with me (with my very basic Indonesian vocabulary!).
